BERT PRAXENTHALER

Born in Munich in 1956. He graduated as a wood sculptor and studied art history, philosophy and history (M.A.) in Munich. Since 1986 he has worked as a freelance sculptor and has distinguished himself as a specialist for sculpture in the preservation of historical monuments. Sculptures are created in his workshop, usually of wood and often painted, but also sometimes from bronze, and since 1998, installations and video works. Graphics and photography have accompanied sculptural works since 1980. His work was represented in several exhibitions both nationally and internationally since 1998. He has directed conservation work on the Bamiyan (Afghanistan) giant Buddhas destroyed by the Taliban and other restoration projects for ICOMOS, (International Council on Monuments and Sites) and UNESCO since 2004. He held a Sculpture seminar in Bamiyan for the dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012 and contributed to a documenta installation with Mike Rakowitz at the Fridericianum in Kassel.
